Guess The Phrase: a new phrase puzzle every day

Guess The Phrase is a free daily word game in the style of Wordle, but the answer is a whole phrase: an idiom, a proverb or an everyday saying. Fill every tile, press Enter and read the colours to close in on the answer within six guesses.

Everyone plays the same Daily phrase, and a new one arrives at midnight. Want more? Guess The Phrase Unlimited serves a fresh phrase the moment you finish.

How to play

Guess the hidden phrase in six tries. The tiles show you how many words it has and how long each one is. Every guess must fill all the tiles, and each word must be a real word.

The basics

  1. 1 Look at the layout. Each group of tiles is one word of the phrase, so you already know the shape of the answer before you type.
  2. 2 Type letters to fill the tiles from left to right. The cursor jumps from one word to the next on its own. Press Enter when every tile is filled. Each word must be a real English word.
  3. 3 After each guess the tiles change colour to tell you how close you are. Use the clues to work out the phrase.
  4. 4 Solve it within six guesses to win. In Daily mode everyone gets the same phrase. In Unlimited, a new phrase is ready as soon as you finish.

Reading the colours

Green: right letter, right spot That letter is in this word, in exactly this position.
Yellow: right word, wrong spot The letter is in this word of the phrase, but in a different position.
Purple: in the phrase, different word The letter is not in this word, but it appears somewhere in another word of the phrase.
Grey: not in the phrase That letter is not in the phrase at all. The key on the keyboard turns grey too.

A round, step by step

The hidden phrase is PIECE OF CAKE.

FRESH AS DAWN: E in FRESH and A in DAWN are green. The F is purple, so F is not in this word but it is somewhere else in the phrase. Everything else is grey.
PLACE OF MIND: P, C and E are green and OF is solved. A and I are purple, so they belong in other words.
PIECE OF CAKE. Solved in three.

Tips

  • Short words first. Two- and three-letter words are usually OF, TO, IN, THE, AND or A. Lock them in early.
  • Purple is a gift. It tells you a letter is in the phrase but not in that word, so move it to another word on your next guess.
  • Think in idioms. Most phrases are common sayings, so once you have a word or two, say it out loud.
  • Use grey letters on the keyboard to rule out whole words before you type them.

About the game

GuessThePhrase.com is a daily phrase-guessing game. Instead of a single word you are hunting for a whole saying, so every guess has to fit several words at once, and a fourth colour, purple, tells you when a letter is in the right phrase but the wrong word.

Play the Daily phrase, the same for everyone and new every midnight, or switch to Unlimited and play as many phrases as you like. Stats for each mode are saved on your device.

Daily phrase One phrase a day, the same for every player. Share your result and compare with friends.
Unlimited mode No waiting. A fresh phrase the moment you finish, with its own stats.

FAQ

A word game where you guess a hidden phrase in six tries. The tile layout shows the number of words and their lengths, and the colours after each guess tell you how close you are.

No, but every word in a guess must be a real English word. If one is not, the game tells you which word to change. The words do not have to make sense together, so you can use a guess to test letters.

The letter is in the phrase, but in a different word than where you put it. Move it to another word on your next guess.

Daily is one phrase a day, the same for everyone, and it resets at midnight in your local time. Unlimited gives you a new random phrase every time you finish.

Well-known English idioms, proverbs, sayings and everyday expressions, such as PIECE OF CAKE or TIME FLIES. After each round the game shows what the phrase means.

On this device, in your browser. Daily and Unlimited stats are kept separately.

Everyone who has solved at least one phrase today. Each person is counted once.

Yes. It is free to play in any browser, on phone, tablet or computer, with no account and nothing to install.
